Benchmark Assessment:

In the last ten years, testing has increasingly been in the education limelight and has gained a negative reputation as being unnecessary, irrelevant, and even inaccurate. This type of testing, such as the Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP) and the Michigan Student Test of Educational Progress (M-STEP) associated with the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), compares students to a benchmark determined by the state or federal government. There is validity for some of the arguments questioning the purpose and the frequency of this testing.

Diagnostic Assessment:

However, not all testing can be put in the same category. Some testing is beneficial to determine gaps or exact areas in which students struggle so that individualized goals can be planned and remediation can take place. This type of testing, diagnostic testing, is the type of testing that will be administered to all elementary and middle school Math from the Mitten tutoring students. High school and college students can choose whether it would be beneficial to be assessed or if they already know exactly where they need help.

Math from the Mitten Assessment:

The Assessment Consultation fee is $50 and will include:

  • Adaptive, diagnostic online mathematics assessment
  • Follow-up meeting or phone call to discuss results
  • Individualized remediation plan

One of the goals of succeeding tutoring session activities will be to fill in those gaps of each individual student’s mathematical knowledge.
